How to choose a trekking tour in Chile?

The difficulty of trekking in Chile

We apply the following scale of difficulty to our treks and stays:

Easy (1)

Not applicable to trekking, only for trips that do not involve any physical activity.

Average (2)

These stays require a correct physical shape, but remain open to all people who regularly practice a sport activity. The duration of the walk per day can be 7 hours maximum with a positive difference in altitude of 800m (occasionally more).

Included in this category are the ascents of Cerro Toco or Volcano Lascar for example.

Difficult (3)

Trekking including intense physical activity. The walking time per day can be more than 7 hours on some days and the positive difference in altitude can be more than 1000m, on uneven terrain, with sometimes passes at high altitudes (over 5000m). For people in good physical shape. These routes include sometimes difficult travel conditions, subject to the vagaries of the weather.

The trek W of Torres del Paine falls into this category.

Very Difficult / Technical (4)

These tours generally require regular practice of high mountain sports (mountaineering, Pyreneanism) or a minimum technical knowledge to be able to participate. They also include walking times and very significant elevation changes.

In short: before choosing a hike, check the daily walking time, the positive difference in altitude and the altitude to be reached.
