What luggage and belongings should I bring for a trip to Chile?

Airlines operate increasingly strict controls on luggage. Check the weight and number of bags allowed in the hold.

For your carry-on baggage, avoid placing any sharp or pointed objects (knife, scissors...) that you will leave in your hold luggage. Liquids or aerosols are also prohibited in the cabin.

Bring two different bags, one bag or a large-capacity suitcase (50 to 70 liters) for all your belongings.

A second one, which must be a small backpack (30 to 40 liters) for the day, for your small practical items (water bottle, camera and other accessories). This small bag can be taken in the cabin.

Please note: domestic airlines accept a maximum weight of 22 kg per person in the hold.

Antipode advises to travel with a maximum weight of 15 kg to facilitate handling.

It often happens that during your trip, excursions of several days are planned with a return to the same hotel, such as trekking in Patagonia, for example. In these cases, it is possible and highly recommended that you leave most of your luggage at your hotel and take only the necessary items for the days of excursions in a smaller bag.

What clothes should I bring for a trip to Peru?

Chile has a wide variety of ecosystems and climates. It is therefore necessary to bring clothing for the heat as well as for the cool nights in the mountainous areas.

The Altitude of certain zones increases the solar radiation very strongly: it is therefore necessary to protect oneself from it effectively. You should bring a hat or a covering cap and sunglasses. For stays in San Pedro de Atacama, in the middle of the desert, travelers should bring light and covering clothes despite the heat, to prevent themselves from the sun. In this region, the thermal amplitude is very important : up to - 20 degrees at 4400m on the geyser sites early in the morning for example !

If you pass by Chiloé or the lakes region, think to take rain clothes.

Finally for Patagonia: protect yourself from the cold and the wind, without going as far as the ski suits!

In short, for a trip to Chile, plan to bring clothes adapted for: the desert, the Altitude, the humid forests, even the snow in the South.

Is it possible to have one's clothes washed in Peru?

You will have the possibility to have your laundry done during your trip. The hotels where you will sleep offer you a laundry service (except the shelters). It is therefore not necessary to bring a change of clothes for each day of your trip.

What shoes should I choose for a trip to Peru?

Chile is a country of open nature with many wild spaces that can be visited on foot. It is necessary to bring very comfortable shoes such as sneakers or walking shoes. City shoes or heels should be avoided.

In the case of a trek

For the hikers leaving for several days in the mountains, do not neglect this step and plan what is necessary.

  • Backpack adapted for the transport of your personal belongings. A rain cape to protect you and your bag.

  • A hiking sleeping bag, of small dimensions (preferably -10 º comfort), and a meat bag (in silk or fleece),

  • Personal belongings to protect you against the cold (gloves, hat, scarf) at high altitudes in particular,

  • Sun protection items (goggles, high index sunscreen, hat or headgear),

  • Walking sticks if you are used to them (very useful for descents to limit the risk of sprains),

  • High trekking shoes (ideal: all waterproof paths),

  • Second pair of shoes for after walking,

  • Personal first-aid kit (in case of treatment, headaches, muscular pain and digestion problems or other),

  • A lamp (preferably frontal) is very useful during bivouacs. Don't forget the batteries! Flat 4.5V batteries are not available in South America,

  • T-shirt and sweatshirt,

  • Trekking pants,

  • Canteen,

  • Shorts,

  • Headgear/hat against the sun,

  • Toilet bag with a towel (microfiber),

  • Original identity document (Original Passport), documents related to your insurance,

  • Toilet paper,

  • Money (in small change; for personal expenses, tips in use),

  • Tissues.

Note: In Chile there is the possibility of buying or renting trekking articles in several sports or mountain equipment stores.

Delay or loss of baggage by airlines landing in Chile

Airlines sometimes do not properly route luggage to its destination.

You will be asked upon arrival in Santiago to fill out a form to forward your luggage. A file number will then be given to you, along with a phone number for the company's baggage service. This procedure is imperative to have a follow-up of your luggage. Remember to ask for it if you are not offered it. It is important to indicate the address of your hotel in Santiago and the address of your hotel in the next stage that has an airport, for example Calama and not San Pedro de Atacama. Your luggage will then be delivered either to your hotel or to the nearest airport (depending on the company).

Antipode cannot be held responsible in case of delay or loss of your luggage.
